R'BULL Pro range: thin reflective insulation

R'BULL Pro 5, 5s, 10, 13 and 20 Multi-layer. They work by reflecting infrared radiation between two air gaps: summer comfort, an addition to thick insulation, solar protection of roofs in tropical climates.

R'Acoustic 10, 20 and Alu, made of high-density recycled textile fibres, for airborne noise between homes, studios, ceilings and floors. R'BULL Pro 5s completes the range as an underlay for floating floors.

Thermal resistances “with two air gaps” apply to the gap thickness and orientation stated in each report. The Rw of R'Acoustic 20 is that of the complete wall tested, not of the product alone.

The answers below are general guidance; every site has its own configuration. For objections about the effectiveness of thin insulation, see also our responses to criticism.

R'BULL Pro thermal insulation

How is R'BULL Pro 13 installed under a roof?

R'BULL Pro 13 is installed under the rafters with an air gap of at least 20 mm on each side: on the roofing side, a ventilated gap that removes moisture; on the inside, a gap closed by the lining. The rolls are laid horizontally with a 100 mm overlap, stapled and then sealed with aluminium tape. This configuration with two 20 mm air gaps is the one that gives R = 1.60 m²K/W in the KTU report. For complex slopes, trimmers and roof outlets, a technical study is recommended.

Is an air gap needed on both sides of R'BULL Pro?

Yes. Thin reflective insulation works through the reflection of infrared radiation in the air gaps around it. Without an air gap, only the product's own resistance remains (0.29 m²K/W for Pro 13, 0.26 for Pro 10). With two 20 mm air gaps, the KTU report calculates 1.60 and 1.59 m²K/W according to EN 16863 and EN ISO 6946, with a declared emissivity of 0.05.

What is the difference between R'BULL Pro 10 and R'BULL Pro 13?

Both products share the same reflective structure and the same B-s1,d0 fire classification. R'BULL Pro 10 is 10 mm thick (product alone 0.26 m²K/W, 1.59 with two 20 mm air gaps); R'BULL Pro 13 is 13 mm thick (0.29 and 1.60 m²K/W). The emissivity measured by LNE is 0.043 for Pro 10 (declared 0.05 under annex D of EN ISO 22097) and 0.053 for Pro 13. Pro 10 gives about 6,000 m² per 40-foot container against about 4,000 m² for Pro 13, which matters for export.

Can R'BULL Pro be installed alone, or must it be combined with another insulant?

It depends on the level required. In mainland France, the grant thresholds (R ≥ 6 to 7 m²K/W in roofs) and the RE 2020 rules lead to combining R'BULL Pro with thick insulation: the French CEE sheets provide for layered installation and take the overall thermal resistance into account. In overseas France, R'BULL Pro 13 is used under CEE sheet BAT-EN-106 (commercial buildings, R ≥ 1.2 m²K/W) and the solar factor of the roof becomes the main criterion. The technical study sets the composition of the wall or roof case by case.

Is R'BULL Pro suitable for roofs in overseas France (RTAA DOM, RTG Guyane)?

Yes, subject to calculating the solar factor of the complete roof. For R'BULL Pro 13, LNE calculated S = 0.029 under a white steel roof with a slightly ventilated 20 mm air gap, and S = 0.018 with, in addition, an unventilated air gap and a plasterboard (note P254377 DEC/4, French Th-Bat rules and order of 17 April 2009). Each territory (Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion, Mayotte) has its own regulations and assumptions on roof colour: I provide the calculation note adapted to the actual roof.

How is the thermal resistance of a wall or roof with R'BULL Pro calculated?

According to EN ISO 6946, the resistance of the wall adds up the product's own resistance (measured with a heat flow meter by KTU under EN ISO 22097 and EN 12667), that of the unventilated air gaps calculated with the emissivity of the faces, and that of the other layers. The result depends on the gap thickness, the heat flow direction (vertical wall, roof, floor) and ventilation. I carry out this calculation for your configuration as part of the technical study.

What is the service life of R'BULL Pro?

The expected service life exceeds 50 years when installation follows the French DTU codes of practice and the conditions of the ETA. The aluminium faces are protected by polyethylene films: they do not oxidise as long as the product is not directly exposed to open air or dust, which preserves the emissivity throughout its use.

R'Acoustic sound insulation

What does the Rw = 50 dB index of R'Acoustic 20 mean?

Rw is the weighted sound reduction index for airborne noise (voices, television, music), calculated under EN ISO 717-1. The value of 50 dB (C = -1; Ctr = -5) was measured by LNEC in Lisbon (report 43/2008-LNEC/LEA) on a complete 290 mm wall: two 0.11 m hollow bricks, an air gap and 20 mm of R'Acoustic 20. It qualifies that wall, not the product alone; on site, performance depends on the mass, total thickness and connections of the actual wall.

Which R'Acoustic should I choose: 10, 20 or Alu?

R'Acoustic 20 (20 mm, 90 kg/m³, 1.8 kg/m²) is the reference for party walls, studios and home cinemas, with the LNEC measurement. R'Acoustic 10 (10 mm, 110 kg/m³) is used when thickness is limited: low ceilings, small rooms, thin partitions; its attenuation value is manufacturer's data, for guidance. R'Acoustic Alu (10 mm, 130 kg/m³) adds a reflective aluminium face and vapour barrier, and has a dynamic stiffness measurement by CEIS Madrid for impact noise under screed. For a floating floor, the R'BULL Pro 5s underlay is intended.

Do R'Acoustic products treat impact noise?

Impact noise (footsteps, knocks) falls under EN ISO 717-2, separate from the Rw index. R'Acoustic Alu is the product documented on this point: dynamic stiffness s' = 16 MN/m³ measured by CEIS Madrid (report CAT0109/12, ENAC accreditation), giving a calculated ΔLw attenuation of 27 to 33 dB depending on the density of the sand-cement screed (EN 12354-2). R'Acoustic 20 and R'Acoustic 10 are aimed first at airborne noise.

How are R'Acoustic products installed?

Indoors, on four supports: walls (lining of partitions or party walls), ceilings (under concrete slabs or timber floors, fixed with a compressed-air nail gun or staples), floors (under levelling screed or under floating floors) and, for R'Acoustic 10 and 20, under roofs. The rolls are butt-jointed and covered with a lining (plasterboard, partition, screed). Compressive strength above 2 t/m² prevents crushing on floors. R'Acoustic Alu is not intended for roof insulation.

What are R'Acoustic products made of?

Recycled textile fibres (wool, cotton, synthetic fibres) woven without glue for R'Acoustic 10 and 20, heat-bonded without glue for R'Acoustic Alu, with a 7 µm pure aluminium face protected by 50 µm polyethylene. Manufactured by Boltherm in Portugal, Ceilingo brand. R'Acoustic Alu declares REACH and RoHS compliance and class A indoor air quality.

Which documents should be provided to an engineering office or an insurer?

For R'BULL Pro: ETA 22/0178, the product's declaration of performance (DoP No. 20260121 for Pro 13, No. 20260330 for Pro 10), the KTU thermal resistance report, the LNE emissivity and solar factor reports and the AITEX reaction-to-fire classification. For R'Acoustic: the LNEC report (R'Acoustic 20) or the CEIS Madrid report (R'Acoustic Alu). All can be downloaded from the Test reports page and I comment on them for your file.

Are R'BULL Pro and R'Acoustic allowed in public-access buildings in France (ERP)?

In France, article AM 8 of the ERP fire safety regulations requires, for an insulant not classified A2-s2,d0, a thermal screen: a quarter of an hour on vertical walls and floors, half an hour on ceilings and roofs. R'BULL Pro 13 (B-s1,d0, AITEX) and R'Acoustic Alu (E-s1,d0) are therefore installed behind plasterboard, a masonry partition or a screed. It is also necessary to distinguish areas actually open to the public from private rooms in the same building, which do not fall under the same rules. The technical study defines this scope.

Are my clients eligible for aid in France (MaPrimeRénov', CEE, éco-PTZ)?

Yes, depending on the scheme and the assembly. In mainland France, CEE grants fund insulation measure by measure, including when R'BULL is installed over a traditional insulant: it is the overall thermal resistance of the assembly that is declared. MaPrimeRénov' major renovation likewise accepts one or more insulating materials to reach the threshold of the part treated. In overseas France, R'BULL Pro 13 is installed under CEE sheet BAT-EN-106 (commercial buildings, R ≥ 1.2), and sheets BAR-EN-106, BAR-EN-107, BAR-EN-109 and BAT-EN-109, like the Agir Plus and HODARI schemes, complete the picture. Eligibility then depends on the thermal resistance installed, on the installer's RGE qualification and on the beneficiary's profile. A full guide by territory is available on request.
